IHRSA Releases 2017 Profiles of Success

Top-tier health clubs reinvested more than one out of every five revenue dollars, posted 6% revenue growth and 4% net membership growth in 2016

BOSTON – November 15, 2017 - Today, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) released its annual Industry Data Survey (IDS) results and the accompanying publication, IHRSA Profiles of Success. The report provides a detailed analysis of the annual performance of leading health and fitness clubs, including results in key metrics such as revenue, membership growth and retention, traffic, payroll, non-dues revenue, and EBITDA. Club reinvestment and profit center analysis as well as income statement and balance sheet data are also provided.

"IHRSA's annual Industry Data Survey results show how leading club operators stand out, posting strong performance in financial and membership indicators,” said Jay Ablondi, IHRSA's executive vice president of global products. “While the overall sample posted solid results, club operators among the top 25% in terms of club reinvestment continued to outperform their peers. According to the latest survey, these clubs allocated 20% of total revenue to club reinvestment and outperformed the overall sample in revenue growth, EBITDA, and net membership growth.”

A total of 113 club companies, representing 6,391 locations, participated in the IDS. Overall, clubs posted net membership growth of 2.9% from 2015 to 2016. EBITDA and revenue growth were recorded at 16.8% and 3.2%, respectively. As a whole, participating clubs indicated reinvesting 6.6% of total revenue. Top performers, who typically reinvested 20.4% of total revenue, posted revenue growth of 6.4%, net membership growth of 4.3%, and had an EBITDA of 23.5%.

Profiles of Success also provides key performance indicators by club type and size along with profit center analyses. Key findings include:

  • Multipurpose facilities posted 2.8% revenue growth, while fitness-only clubs recorded 5.1% revenue growth.

  • The smallest club segment (under 25,000 square feet) posted the greatest net membership growth at 6.3%.

  • Among participating clubs, personal training is the number one profit center, accounting for a median of 8.4% of total revenue generated.

  • At fitness-only clubs, small group training ranked second among leading profit centers, while racquet claimed second at multipurpose clubs.

“With Profiles of Success, club operators can compare their performance results across profit centers, membership growth and traffic as well as income and expense categories,” said Melissa Rodriguez, IHRSA’s senior research manager. “Along with The IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report, Profiles is an annual must-have publication for any club operator seeking to better understand health club performance, improve insights on fitness consumers, and, ultimately, grow their business.”

Profiles of Success is based upon membership and financial data for 2016 and 2015, provided voluntarily by 113 club companies, representing 6,391 facilities. The report provides key performance indicators for several club types: fitness-only, multipurpose, independent, and multi-chain facilities as well as breakouts by club size and monthly dues. A snapshot of health club consumer participation and demographics are also included. In addition, the publication contains a profit center section that analyzes revenue streams from personal and small group training, racquet sports, spas, pro shop/retail, food & beverage, children's/youth programs, and aquatics/pool.

The report is also available in three parts for those who don’t need the full publication:

  • Part 1: Executive Summary and Industry Outlook

  • Part 2: Membership Pricing, Payroll, and Facilities

  • Part 3: Financial and Operating Performance

Profiles of Success may be purchased at ihrsa.org/profiles. The entire PDF can be purchased for $499.95 ($249.95 for IHRSA members). The three separate parts are available for $179.95 each ($89.95 each for IHRSA members).

The IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report is available for $199.95 ($99.95 for IHRSA members).

FitFixNow Brings Continuing Ed Into the 21st Century

Atlanta, GA — November 1, 2017 — For decades, the only answer to getting Continuing Education Units, or CEUs, was either attending an expensive conference or getting something through the mail, be it a book, CD, DVD or even VHS tape. At the initial founding of FitFixNow, no one was offering 100% online, 100% on-demand courses which could be taken on the individual's own schedule.

This is what motivated FitFixNow to start producing 100% online courses and exams with an instant certificate delivered after completion. FitFixNow’s co-founder, Jane Curth, has spent her entire professional life in fitness education at the collegiate level. This included pioneering online education for students and using that experience to make FitFixNow the best learning experience it can possibly be.

She’s also held her Personal Training certification with the American Council on Exercise, or ACE, since 1998. But she knows first hand how essential it is to get CEUs done because she let her certification lapse a few years later.

“I couldn’t believe I let it happen,” Curth began, “it was such a huge pain and inconvenience to go through that whole process of getting certified again. Just renewing the certification would have been so much easier.” Ever since, FitFixNow has sought to offer the best pricing and most convenience when serving fitness professionals.

“Easy use and convenience, along with proper instruction, really is what we have to offer,” Curth continued. “Being able to access quality educational content in a modern way will make the industry that more accessible to everyone.”

Branded Training Courses for Gyms

FitFixNow has also begun partnering with boutique gyms looking to save money on training services for new employees, personal trainers and class instructors. This is a great way for a small gym owner to really save time and money by using online video training to make sure that their employees receive consistent, top-quality training without the need for expensive and time-consuming in-person instructors.

This can enable a gym that normally couldn’t afford such services a much better price point and access to this type of service. It will ensure that standards are clearly explained so that everyone in the gym in each respective position can better-execute their jobs, leading to more satisfied clients.

Currently, there is a robust offering of CEU courses on their website, www.fitfixnow.com. For gym training inquiries, please reach out to info@fitfixnow.com.

Genesis Health Clubs Continues Explosive Growth with Move Into Colorado

Miramont Lifestyle Fitness joins Genesis Health Clubs rapidly growing family of locations

Wichita, KS — November 1, 2017 — Miramont Lifestyle Fitness announces today the sale of all four health clubs, located in Fort Collins, Colorado, to Genesis Health Clubs based in Wichita, Kansas. This includes the three main full-service health clubs under the Miramont Lifestyle Fitness name: Miramont North, Miramont South and Miramont Central, with amenities such as indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts and a climbing gym, as well as REVE fitness, a boutique studio currently operated by Miramont Lifestyle Fitness.

Founder and owner Cliff Buchholz is pleased to have Genesis taking the reins of Miramont Lifestyle Fitness. “It’s nice to be able to turn these clubs over to a like-minded individual. Between our love for fitness and entrepreneurial spirits, I know that my clubs are going to someone who shares the vision I’ve spent decades building. These clubs are who I am. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

With this acquisition, Genesis Health Clubs expands its footprint to 44 clubs throughout Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, and now Colorado.

Genesis Health Clubs owner Rodney Steven II commented, “It’s such a natural fit. Miramont Lifestyle Fitness does so many great things and they are similar to our clubs in a lot of ways. Plus, we’ve wanted to expand into Colorado for some time. I’ve long admired the state’s dedication to health and fitness; we’re going to fit right in.”

While the ownership will be new, Steven assured members they won’t be seeing any sudden changes. “Often, we move in to clubs that need a lot of help and rehabilitation. In this case, we’re happy to be taking the keys to exceptionally well-run clubs. This is a tremendous opportunity to learn, while striving to meet and exceed the high standards the members expect.”

“Cliff is an industry icon,” said Steven. “He and his team have spent over 40 years building a shining beacon of fitness in Fort Collins. He was one of the top 20 tennis players in the country and he was one of the founders of the Lipton Open. What a legend. We are proud and humbled to have the opportunity to work hard to continue his legacy.”

When asked about future plans in Colorado, Steven grinned. “We’ll see what the future holds. Right now, I’m just focused on running these clubs right. Of course, I won’t mind getting some workouts in these beautiful facilities while soaking in the mountain views in the meantime.”

Leading Health and Fitness Nonprofit Hires Chief Strategy Officer, Signals Intent to Be Part of Broader Efforts to Increase Physically Active Lifestyles

New role filled by strategic-planning expert and facilitative leader with experience driving key initiatives for the American Council on Exercise

San Diego, CA — November 1, 2017 — The American Council on Exercise (ACE) has added a chief strategy officer to its executive team in an effort to expand the organization’s work beyond the traditional fitness sector, support the spread of grassroots community physical-activity programs and stewarding cross-sector collaboration to integrate physical-activity intervention into healthcare. Hired to fill the new role is Shane Kinkennon, a strategic planning expert and facilitative leader who has driven key initiatives and special projects for ACE since 2012.

“As part of our mission to get people moving, ACE seeks to reach far beyond the fitness industry to facilitate broader efforts that will speed the adoption of physically active lifestyles for everyone,” said Scott Goudeseune, president and chief executive officer for ACE. “In his new role, Shane will steward improvements to ACE’s core operations and key processes, as well as cultivate innovative programs and initiatives that play to our organization’s strengths. It’s an investment in more vigorous pursuit of our lofty mission.”

Kinkennon will help ACE craft initiatives, align internal resources and unlock the organization’s full potential to equip far more people with the skills, training and credentials necessary to be true influencers for physically active living in communities across the country. Kinkennon will also support ACE’s work in state capitals and in Washington D.C., to advance public policies to bring science-based physical-activity options to people directly where they live, work, play and pray.

From 2015-2017, Kinkennon served as project director for the ACE-funded Prescription for Activity (PfA) Task Forcea national group of business, academic, philanthropic and government experts spanning preventive-care, disease prevention, care delivery, public health and fitness. The PfA Task Force convened to map out how to mobilize healthcare, working in concert with the communities it serves, to help far more Americans achieve physical-activity levels recommended by the U.S. government. ACE convened the PfA Task Force because studies show that advice from health professionals can significantly influence the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors, including regular physical activity.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has called for the integration of physical-activity interventions into healthcare for large categories of patients who are at risk of costly lifestyle disease and other chronic conditions.

Before joining ACE, Kinkennon was cofounder and partner at the strategic-planning firm Wolfe Kinkennon, where he worked with groups ranging from a task force of state Medicaid directors, benefit decision-makers at the nation's leading health plans, education-reform advocates in Colorado and nationally, and leading national outdoor-recreation groups. Prior to that, he was the founder and principal of Kinkennon Communications Inc, where for 11 years he helped philanthropies, leading national nonprofits, major trade associations, and issue-based coalitions to achieve mission and business aims through strategic communications.

Kinkennon began his career in Washington D.C., where he designed, led and supported comprehensive public-affairs campaigns on health, financial services, retail, technology, education reform, food safety, and other public-policy issues. Before moving to San Diego to join ACE, he was living and working in Colorado.

About ACE

With a mission to get people moving, the nonprofit organization American Council on Exercise (ACE) educates, certifies and represents more than 70,000 currently certified fitness professionals, health coaches and other allied health professionals. ACE advocates for a new intersection of fitness and healthcare, bringing the highly qualified professionals ACE represents into the healthcare continuum so they can contribute to the national solution to physical inactivity and obesity. ACE is the leading certifier in its space and all four of its primary certification programs are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the gold standard in the United States for accreditation of certifications that assess professional competence. ACE also plays an important public-service role, conducting and providing science-based research and resources on safe and effective physical activity and sustainable behavior change. For more information, call 800-825-3636 or visit ACEfitness.org. AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EXERCISE, ACE and ACE logos are Registered Trademarks of the American Council on Exercise.
